May Spirit of the Mustang Recipient

In trying to decide who to pass this award to, I have asked myself many times what criteria to use.  There are so many here deserving of this award. There are those who are selfless, kind, and giving. I know many who go the extra mile everyday and who believe the best in their students.  Many are popular with students because of their fun and engaging lessons. Many are less noticed, but quietly do amazing things for students and staff alike. Then I asked myself what does it mean to have the spirit of a mustang?

Mustangs are a mythic symbol of freedom, heroism, romance, limitless possibilities, and the vanishing West.  Along with that fantasy, wild horses also embody some of the intractable complexities and contradictions of modern American life.

As teachers we deal daily with complexities and contradictions.  That might be how students see us, how we feel about the job, or just the complexities of human nature.  Heaven knows our students bring enough complexity to this job for all of us. Some amongst us, in spite of the daily grind of this job continue to help us believe in the limitless possibilities of human capacity, to believe that what we do everyday matters.  They push themselves and their students to the limits and help them see the wonder of the human mind and the world around us. They take complex things and make them simple. Simple enough that a 7th or 8th grader can understand it. They make sense of a disorderly sometimes chaotic work and keep the end goal in mind: Student learning.  They help other teachers align and design their curriculum. They are a support to their department and new teachers. They understand the basics of this profession and teach others to use the data to improve. The person that has helped me see and focus the most on the basics this year is….Julie Hammari. Julie is an incredible teacher; driven, organized, and knowledgeable.  She has clear expectations and knows how to use the data to see if students have met those expectations. She is always willing to reteach something or try something new to help students learn. She has helped me improve my curriculum in both content and DOK level. She is a great friend and valued member of our science team. Thank you Julie for helping us and our students reach our potential.

Dear Students and Parents,

Last Mustang Message for 2018-19 School Year

This will be the last Mustang Message this school year.  Many thanks go out to all our supportive parents, our hardworking students and our amazing teachers for a successful year!  Look for the next Mustang Message in the later part of July. It will contain registration dates and other back to school information.

If You Are Attending Lagoon - PLEASE READ

Thursday, May 23rd is Lagoon day - Rain or shine, buses will leave promptly at 8:00 a.m. Please arrive at school by 7:40 a.m. in order to load the buses.  Because we have to pay the bus company for your student’s seat whether they go or not, refunds will not be available to those that miss the bus or choose not to attend. In order to accurately account for each student, they will need to ride the same bus up and back.  On the bus ride up students will be informed that buses will leave Lagoon promptly at 3:30 p.m. We estimate that we will be home between 4:30 and 5:00 p.m. Some parents have asked about picking up their own student at a prearranged time. If you are planning on picking your student up at Lagoon, rather than having them ride the bus home, please provide a parent/guardian note, signed and dated, giving permission to your student to be released.  Students must give this note to the teacher as they board the bus here at MJHS so that we are aware of the situation. Because of student safety concerns, only students that provide a written note will be permitted to be released and not ride the bus home. Entrance tickets to Lagoon are $35. Students will purchase their entrance ticket when they arrive at Lagoon on May 23rd - OR - Student tickets may be purchased in advance, online at http://www.lagoonpark.com/ using promo code: SCHOOL19  - click the “Buy Tickets” button in the upper right corner. Be aware that school rate tickets are ONLY valid May 15, 16, 22, 23, 29 and 30, 2019. (Lagoon does not accept checks). School will be held during normal hours for those students who choose not to go to Lagoon or are not eligible to attend.

Candy Bomber Visits MJHS

Attributions:
Stacy Bryant

Gail Halvorsen, the Candy Bomber, taught Mrs. Bryant's class today that the keys to happiness are Attitude, Gratitude, and Service Before Self. It was amazing to have him visit and it was all thanks to Lizzie Tew, who took it upon herself to set it up. We are so grateful he could come and share his wisdom with us!
