The teacher I am nominating for the Spirit of the Mustang is dedicated and talented in many diverse ways.  Of course this could be said of every teacher in this room today. A few of the particular talents possessed by this teacher include origami, photography, drawing, original super hero costumes, and the patience of Job. This teacher is a fan of Star Wars, Calvin & Hobbes, Lord of the Rings, and helping students be successful.

This teacher could serve as the Secretary of Treasury seeing how he has designed several unique and fascinating forms of currency used as a reward in his classes.  Of course I am referring to Alan Anderson.

Alan is a true Renaissance man in every sense of the word. He has many talents and areas of knowledge. He has worked as a heavy equipment operator, framer, and knows how to do finish work, plumbing, electrical, landscaping, install sprinkling systems, duct work and pretty much every skill needed to finish a home. He has also served as a scout master for several years so you know he has the ability to keep a cool head under pressure and adapt to the most unpredictable circumstances.

One of the things I appreciate most about Alan is his desire to help any student or faculty member and the patience he has in working with them. He personally helped me with a Geometry class I took a few years ago. He has always been willing to give me lesson plans, assignments, assessments or projects that he has created.

A favorite memory of mine is of Alan dressing up on “Super Hero Day” with a vest full of pockets filled with different flavors of gum. He would wait for students to ask him who he was, then he would ask the students if they needed saving. When they responded “yes” he would give them a stick of gum. How fitting that Mr. Anderson’s super hero waits for students to ask a question, has a ready answer for them and rewards them with a refreshing stick of gum of their choice.

Alan strives to help his students achieve success. He designs his lessons in a way that helps students learn and retain concepts that will be of most worth to them. He lives inspired, he inspires others, and he is “The Spirit of the Mustang”!
