Changing the Rules

In our 8th grade U.S. History classes, students have been learning about our nation’s Constitution. To teach students about the Constitution and the compromises that were made we have completed some unique hand on learning experiences. One of the highlights of this unit is an activity called “Changing the Rules”. In each class students work together in small cooperative learning groups to brainstorm ideas about school rules they would like to see changed. Students volunteer to work on a presentation about changing a school rule and ultimately present their ideas on behalf of the class to the administration of MJHS. A wide variety of ideas were presented, some of the most interesting dealt with backpacks, having school dances on Friday, and improving school lunch options. The administration listened to these presentations and told the students how they could pursue their ideas. This experience was very beneficial for all students and gives a great glimpse of how the democratic process works.
