To better understand their class novel, Freak the Mighty, 7th graders had "Disabilities Day". Students experienced simulations for learning disabilities such as dyslexia and physical disabilities. While it is impossible to truly know what it is like to have a disability without actually having one, the activity helped the 7th graders relate to others and the novel.
Here is what our Mustangs have to say: "I will have more sympathy for people with disabilities. I will try to help them as much as I can." Jane Sweat
"I will be more patient from now on." Talmage Stevenson
"A lot of people have disabilities and it's hard, so we shouldn't make fun of other people or pressure them because of their disability." Etlagi Atllfale
"I realized learning disabilities are tough because you have to take time that other people don't have to. It makes you feel bad when it seems like everyone else already knows how to do it." Ashley Flake
"I'll stop telling people to hurry and let them take their time." Luke Bell
"You should never treat someone with disabilities bad because they can't do something since it might be harder for them to do it." Carson Hamilton
About 10% of students have some kind of a disability. Understanding that is helping these Mustangs appreciate everyone around them.
