The past few weeks have been very busy for the MJHS HOPE SQUAD. We started out
the year during Suicide Prevention Week having our 1 st Annual SAFEUT Campaign.
During lunch we had a prize wheel and asked students to sign a petition to download
the SafeUT App on their phones. Also, we had our annual Hope Squad retreat to get to
know the members as well as provide insights on the importance of being a leader and
example to others at MJHS.

“Battle of the Books”

Mapleton Junior High School

“Battle of the Books”

“America’s Battle of the Books is a voluntary reading incentive program for students in grades 3-12.  The purpose is simply to encourage students to read good books and have fun while completing with peers.”

We are excited to kick off our third year of Battle of the Books at Mapleton Junior High School!  Mrs. Marett will introduce the voluntary program to all seventh and eighth graders during your English class orientation. Ninth graders are also invited to participate.

Interested students will be part of a team of 4 or 5 students.  Each team member will choose 4 to 5 books to read; however, we encourage students to read as many books as they would like from the list.  There are 20 books on the list. In early January 2020, teams will come together for a game show style tournament during school where they will work as a team to answer questions about the books on the list.  (See reverse side for book list) Students do not have to read every book on the list; however, the more books each person on the team reads, the better chance they have when answering questions in a battle.

The questions are written like this example.

Question:  In what book is there a dog named Watch?  Answer: Boxcar children by Warner

(The answer is always a title and author's’ last name)

Students may form their own teams.  Teams can consist of seventh, eighth and ninth graders. They must turn in their signed permission slips (http://mjhs.nebo.edu/sites/mjhs.nebo.edu/files/Battleofthebooks.pdf) stapled together with other students they would like on their team (up to 5 per team).  You DO NOT need to form a full team to submit your permission slip; we will form teams for all students that do not have a full team request or friend preference.

We have five copies of each book in our school library and digital copies on Overdrive that students will be able to check out.  Some of the books are also available at your public library.

Students interested in participating must return the signed permission slip to Mrs. Marett in the library by Friday, October 4!

We need volunteers to help run battles during school hours one week in January.  If you would like to help out during that week, please list your name, phone number, and email address.

First Travel Brochures in History!

Mrs. Rowley

Would you be willing to give up everything you have for a chance to become Rich, Famous or Secure a spot in the afterlife?

In U.S. History Mrs. Rowley's class has been learning about the 3 main motivations for European Exploration. Students created a brochure to entice Europeans to take the risks. Highlighting the possibility of a greater reward to offset the possibility of losing everything even facing death for the prize. The Students did a Marvelous job on their brochures! Please congratulate them on a job well done when you see them.

Dear Students and Parents,

Please Update Emergency Contact Information

Parents, So that you are aware and ready for emergency communication from MJHS. If/When the school needs to quickly send an important or urgent message out to all parents, we send a text message through our communication system. In order for you to receive that message you must have entered a cell phone number in Aspire ahead of time. To check whether your phone is designated as a cell phone or to add your cell phone number on your account you should login to your parent Aspire account - After selecting your student, scroll to the bottom of the page and click the edit pencil icon in the upper right hand of the contact information box. This opens a new window that shows all contact information for your family. To check cell phone status or enter a cell phone number, click the edit pencil icon next to your name, toward the bottom of the box ensure that your phone is listed as a “Cell Phone”. The same number can be entered multiple times - for example as the “Main Number” and  “Cell Phone”. Remember that in order to receive text messages you MUST have a number marked as a cell phone number. If you have any questions about this process, please call our school registrar Mrs. Pond at 801-489-2896 and she can help you update your information.
